Will your apps work when you land?

A high-level snapshot of internet restrictions — VoIP blocks, firewalls — in 19 countries. Select a country below; it's a starting point, not legal advice.

What this tool does

The Internet Freedom Check gives you a high-level snapshot of internet restrictions in a destination before you go: is it open, mostly open, partially restricted or restricted — and what that means for VoIP apps, VPNs and everyday browsing.

Why it matters for travelers: in several countries WhatsApp calls, FaceTime or Zoom are restricted, and some block VPN websites — meaning you must set up your VPN before arrival, not after. The tool reads from esimgomobile's built-in snapshot table of 19 countries, compiled from publicly known restrictions. Anything not in the table gets honest "no data" guidance: check current travel advisories.

How it works
  1. 1
Select a country from the list below.
  2. 2
Read the snapshot: restriction level plus a short note on VoIP, VPNs and content.
  3. 3
Before you fly: verify against current travel advisories — restrictions change, and this table is a snapshot, not legal advice.
Real parameters

Honest capability note

High-level snapshot only — compiled from public sources, not a legal opinion, and restrictions change without notice. Countries outside the 19-country table return an explicit no data answer rather than an invented verdict. Always check current advisories and local law before traveling.

Questions, answered

Before you ask.

Is this legal advice?
No. It's a high-level travel snapshot from a static table. Local law, enforcement and current events change — verify with official travel advisories and, where it matters, local counsel.
Why do I need a VPN before arriving in some countries?
Because restricted countries often block VPN websites too — you can't download the app after landing. Install and test your VPN on Wi-Fi before departure.
Which countries restrict VoIP calls?
Known examples include the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, where WhatsApp/FaceTime calling is restricted. Enforcement varies — plan around it with alternatives where legal.
My country isn't listed — what should I do?
Treat it as 'no data' and check current travel advisories before you go. The tool never invents a restriction level for unlisted countries.

How Internet Freedom Check works

  1. Open the tool
    • No account needed — Internet Freedom Check runs right in your browser.
    • Everything happens on the page; nothing to install.
  2. Enter your details
    • Answer the few questions the tool asks — trip, destination, dates.
    • The tool validates as you type so mistakes get caught early.
  3. Get your answer
    • Results appear instantly, computed from your inputs.
    • Every result links onward to the next step — usually a plan or checkout.

Tools are free and instant. They're the fastest way to turn a vague travel question into a concrete next step.

The pattern is always the same: tell the tool a little about your trip, and it does the research you'd otherwise do across ten tabs.

When to use Internet Freedom Check

  • Mid-trip: when you need to top up, switch plans, or check what's next.
  • At the airport: for last-minute answers when plans change.
  • While planning: before you book anything, so connectivity is priced into the trip.
  • After the trip: to review what you used and plan smarter next time.

Most travelers use Internet Freedom Check once while planning and once on the road. Both visits take under a minute.

Bookmark it — travel questions have a habit of returning at the worst moment.

Tips for best results

  • Download offline maps for your destination — they save data and work in dead zones.
  • WhatsApp, iMessage and FaceTime keep your existing number on a data eSIM — no need to tell anyone a new number.
  • Set a data alert at 80% so a top-up never surprises you mid-trip.
  • Keep your home SIM active for two-factor codes from your bank; run data on the eSIM line.
  • Charge your phone before long travel days; weak signal areas drain batteries faster.
  • Turn off auto-play on social apps before you fly; it quietly eats roaming data.

The tool is only as good as its inputs — a rough date range beats a perfect one you never enter.

If a result surprises you, rerun with different inputs. Exploring the options is the point.
