Is your VPN leaking your DNS?

A guided manual check. Browsers can't run automatic DNS probes — this tool is honest about that and walks you through the real test instead.

What this tool does

The DNS Leak Test helps you verify that your VPN is actually protecting you. What a leak is: your VPN encrypts traffic, but your DNS queries — the "what site is this?" lookups — can still travel to your ISP's resolvers, revealing roughly where you are and which sites you visit.

Why this is a guided check and not a button: browsers cannot run automatic DNS probes — a webpage has no way to observe which DNS resolver your system used. Any site claiming a one-click in-browser DNS-leak test is misleading you. The honest route: connect your VPN, run the standard test on a dedicated leak-test service, and read the results — this page walks you through exactly that.

How it works
  1. 1
Connect your VPN and confirm it's active.
  2. 2
Open a DNS-leak test service and run the standard test — e.g. dnsleaktest.com or ipleak.net.
  3. 3
Read the servers: if they belong to your ISP or your real location, DNS is leaking; if they belong to your VPN provider, you're clean.
  4. 4
Fix it: enable your VPN's DNS-leak protection / private-DNS setting, or set DNS manually to your VPN provider's resolvers.
Honest capability note

Guidance-only tool: it performs no network probing itself and returns fixed troubleshooting steps — the same design as the esimgomobile ChatGPT app tool. Any automatic DNS-leak test inside a browser is technically impossible; this page tells you that upfront instead of faking a result.

Questions, answered

Before you ask.

What is a DNS leak, exactly?
When your VPN encrypts traffic but your domain-name lookups still go through your ISP's DNS servers. An observer can see which sites you visit even though the content is encrypted.
Why can't a webpage test this automatically?
Browsers deliberately don't expose which DNS resolver the OS used — a page can only resolve names through the browser's own stack. A real test needs to trick the resolver into identifying itself via crafted queries, which requires a dedicated test service you visit manually.
How do I fix a DNS leak?
Enable DNS-leak protection in your VPN app (most reputable VPNs have it), or set your system DNS to your VPN provider's resolvers — or to a privacy-focused public resolver — so queries never touch the ISP.
Does a travel eSIM protect me from DNS leaks?
An eSIM gives you mobile data instead of sketchy hotel Wi-Fi — a big security upgrade on its own. But DNS behavior depends on your VPN and device settings, not the SIM. Run this check on every new connection.

How DNS Leak Test works

  1. Open the tool
    • No account needed — DNS Leak Test runs right in your browser.
    • Everything happens on the page; nothing to install.
  2. Enter your details
    • Answer the few questions the tool asks — trip, destination, dates.
    • The tool validates as you type so mistakes get caught early.
  3. Get your answer
    • Results appear instantly, computed from your inputs.
    • Every result links onward to the next step — usually a plan or checkout.

The pattern is always the same: tell the tool a little about your trip, and it does the research you'd otherwise do across ten tabs.

Tools are free and instant. They're the fastest way to turn a vague travel question into a concrete next step.

When to use DNS Leak Test

  • Mid-trip: when you need to top up, switch plans, or check what's next.
  • While planning: before you book anything, so connectivity is priced into the trip.
  • At the airport: for last-minute answers when plans change.
  • After the trip: to review what you used and plan smarter next time.

Most travelers use DNS Leak Test once while planning and once on the road. Both visits take under a minute.

Bookmark it — travel questions have a habit of returning at the worst moment.

Tips for best results

  • Charge your phone before long travel days; weak signal areas drain batteries faster.
  • Screenshot your hotel address and booking confirmations — you'll want them with no signal.
  • Keep your home SIM active for two-factor codes from your bank; run data on the eSIM line.
  • Turn off auto-play on social apps before you fly; it quietly eats roaming data.
  • Download offline maps for your destination — they save data and work in dead zones.
  • WhatsApp, iMessage and FaceTime keep your existing number on a data eSIM — no need to tell anyone a new number.

If a result surprises you, rerun with different inputs. Exploring the options is the point.

The tool is only as good as its inputs — a rough date range beats a perfect one you never enter.
