What this tool does

The Captive Portal Detector is a guided check for the most common public-Wi-Fi frustration: you join the network, everything looks connected, but nothing loads. The culprit is usually a captive portal — the hotel/airport/café login page that must be completed before the network opens.

The instant test: open http://captive.apple.com or http://neverssl.com. If a login page appears instead of "Success", you're behind a captive portal. These are plain-HTTP test URLs by design — HTTPS pages fail silently behind portals, which is why "Wi-Fi works but nothing loads" is the classic symptom.

What is a captive portal?
A web page that intercepts your first connection on a public network and requires a login, payment or terms acceptance before granting internet access. Hotels, airports, airlines and cafés all use them.
Why do the test URLs use http:// instead of https://?
HTTPS connections fail silently behind a captive portal (the portal can't present a valid certificate for the site you wanted), so browsers just spin. Plain HTTP lets the portal redirect you visibly to its login page — which is exactly what you want to see.
The login page never appears — what now?
Forget the network and rejoin, open the test URL in a private/incognito window, or try a different browser. Some portals only trigger on the first HTTP request after joining.
Is it safe to log into a captive portal?
